  • Lighting - Couple Portraits | Ivory Grove

couple portraits lighting Getting Ready First Look Ceremony Family Photos Bridal Party Couple Portraits Reception lighting considerations Outside, we are generally fighting the too-much-light situation. We recommend: Our number 1 tip is to structure your timeline so that outside photos can be taken within the 2-hours-before-sunset timeframe. We refer to this as Golden Hour because the sun is low on the horizon and travels through more air particles that scatter and naturally diffuse the light so that it is just the right amount - enough to give detail and crispness to a photo, but not so much that there are harsh shadows and squinting. Skin also gets a beautiful glow and the natural colors of grass and trees become prettier as well. If there are outside photos that will be taken before the golden hour timeframe, when the sun is strong, it's important to have locations that have full, even shade and a good background. If it is a cloudy day, consider yourself lucky! Clouds diffuse the light as well and create conditions similar to golden hour so there aren't harsh shadows and squinting. Examples of full, even shade include the side of a large building or a grove of very dense, thick trees. When you look at the ground, you shouldn't be able to see a change in light from the leaves. What you see on the ground will translate to faces if photos are taken there. Below are examples of photos taken outside when the sun was still strong. Notice the difference getting in full, even shade makes on the photo: Full sun Even shade Here is an example where we took photos both indoors and outdoors. Same couple, same day, different lighting: Indoor with flash Outdoor in even shade Golden Hour golden hour We highly recommend setting your timeline so that most of your photos can be taken during the 2 hours before sunset. We know this isn't always possible, and that's okay. But just so you can see why we love golden hour so much... All these gems were taken during golden hour: Previous ← Family Photos Next → Couples Portraits Out of gallery Previous ← Bridal Party Next → Reception

  • Lighting - Getting Ready | Ivory Grove

getting ready lighting Getting Ready First Look Ceremony Family Photos Bridal Party Couple Portraits Reception Getting Ready lighting considerations Getting ready often occurs indoors. So choosing a location with large windows is going to be huge. Depending on the time of day and the direction of the sun, you may want to open up those curtains or close them partially. Your photographer can guide you, but we'll want enough light but nothing too harsh. It often works well to get close to a window and maximize that beautiful, natural light. Not enough light will cause grainy, noisy images. There just isn't enough information for the camera to capture the details we want for a clear, crisp photo. If you're in a building with no windows, high ceilings, and low artificial light, there is not enough light. Detail shots need enough light too! If there isn't a good place with natural light, we will want to allow for some extra time to take them outside or to another spot in the venue that has a good window. It's also a great option to take some getting-ready photos outdoors ! There is no rule that they have to be indoors. Bridesmaid reveals are fun outside too. Enjoy some examples of that below:) Visit our timelines page for more tips Previous ← Lighting Home Next → First Look
